What is Sports Marketing

Definition

Sports marketing is:

  • the specific application of marketing principles and processes to sport products (e.g., teams, leagues, events, etc.) and

  • the the marketing of non-sports products (e.g., cigarettes, beer, long-distance phone service, etc.) through associations with sports.

The Business Side of Sports

Sports marketing executives are the people who usually handle the business side of sports. Some of them work for a league or sports association. Some others usually work for teams. Some work on behalf of major companies by managing promotional campaigns and sponsorships of sporting events.

In addition, there are some who organize sports-related events on behalf of sports organizations, associations, teams, or companies. There are many tourism offices and convention and visitors bureaus that hire sports marketing executives specifically to work and help a particular city lure important sports events and teams to its town.
