Computer Honors Institute

Frequently Asked Questions

What will I learn?

Participants will develop both analytical and creative skills by working in a Microsoft Windows® environment with business analytics tools like Microsoft Excel® and Access® - and multimedia applications, like Macromedia® Fireworks MX and Microsoft PowerPoint®. We try to teach concepts that are not part of a general high school curriculum and that you would learn in your first year of college.

A typical session will consist of approximately 45 minutes of demonstration and instruction, followed by 45 minutes of hands-on exercises.

Who can attend?

CHI is open to high school juniors and seniors who want to learn how computers are used in business who have been nominated by their teacher or counselor. Area high school computer and business teachers, along with guidance counselors, will be asked to nominate two or three outstanding students for this program. Anyone who is interested should ask one of these people to serve as their sponsor!

How do I apply?

Interested students can apply online or by mail. We encourage students to complete the initial application online and submit the nomination and transcript via mail or fax by the application deadline posted on our website. Participation is limited so please submit your application as early as possible.

What are the qualifications for nomination?

  1. Interest and aptitude in computing
  2. Intention to study business and/or information technology at the collegiate level
  3. Senior level class standing
  4. Nomination by teacher or guidance counselor

Do I need to bring any supplies with me for class?

Participants are encouraged to bring a thumb drive if they would like to save their work as we progress through the program.

Should I bring money with me?

Some students like to bring money so they can purchase a soft drink, coffee, or snack during our break. You will not need to bring money for parking as we will take care of that for you.

Are there any stipulations in regard to earning the 3 free credits?

Participants must be accepted to Duquesne University and have made their initial non-refundable deposit by May 1 or within three weeks of acceptance to attend the summer sessions. In addition, participants must attend both the spring and summer CHI programs to be eligible for the 3 free credits. Unfortunately, the credits are non-transferable if you decide to go to another college or university.
